Stories

Many immigrants have been discriminated against, ridiculed, and tortured by ICE and their detention centers. Here are the stories of some immigrants who chose to fight in court:

Luis Manuel Rodriguez Delgadillo:

Luis Manuel Rodriguez Delgadillo was one of fifteen detainees to stand up against their placed detention center, and file a lawsuit for disregarding medical, mental health, and discriminating against detainees with disabilities. Before being detained, Delgadillo required severe mental health needs such as medication. After being put in detention, Delgadillo experienced many symptoms(including hallucinations) due to the facility changing his medication.

Jose Segovia Benitez:

Jose Segovia Benitez was another plaintiff in the case regarding ICE's disregard towards medical, mental health, and discriminating against detainees with disabilities. Benitez was a U.S Marine Corps Veteran who returned from Iraq after being diagnosed with depression, hearing loss, a brain injury, PTSD, and a heart condition. He underwent deficient cardiac treatment in Adelanto, California where he was put inside solitary confinement, which was a torture method for behavior due to his mental health disability.

Jamil Arzate:

Jamil Arzate was a nine-year-old boy born and raised in New Jersey, though his parents and older sister were born in Honduras and moved to the U.S. One day, ICE came to his house and took his mother, father, and twelve-year-old sister. ICE later deported his family and left him alone with his cousin back in New Jersey. Jamil wanted to leave with them, but he did not know any Spanish and he would be tortured there. Now, at the age of twelve, Jamil continues to fight for his family.
